Types of Closet Doors Materials

Published March 2025

Closet doors come in a variety of materials, each with different aesthetics, durability, and price points.

Steel framed closet doors are sturdy and durable and used for lower cost applications.  The hardware finish is painted or coated to simulate a wood finish.  Aluminum is another popular choice for frames and tracks.  Aluminum hardware is more costly however it is lightweight, rust-resistant and often used for modern designs.  Aluminum hardware would be anodized or painted.

The frame of the door is fitted to an insert material of which there are many to choose from, here are some common types:

Wood Doors ($$$)

  1. Solid Wood Closet Doors – Durable, classic, and elegant, but can be expensive.
  2. Engineered Wood / Veneer (MDF, Plywood, or Particleboard core) Closet Doors – More affordable, lightweight, and resistant to warping.

Glass Doors ($$)

  1. Frosted Glass Closet Doors – Offers privacy while allowing light to pass through.  Sandblasted glass gives a frosted effect but is not uniform like acid etch. Laminated safety glass is a great frosted glass material as it is safety rated and has a smooth glass surface front and back.
  2. Clear Glass Closet Doors – Sleek and modern, but requires frequent cleaning. Can be tempered clear glass or laminated safety glass.
  3. Mirrored Glass Closet Doors – Makes the room appear larger and serves a dual purpose.  Mirror inserts come in different colours (clear, brown and grey tinted).  Antique mirror is also an option.
  4. Patterned Glass Closet Doors – Available in many patterns, offers some privacy and allows light to pass through.  Tempered for safety, pattern glass inserts are great for modern aesthetics.
  5. Backpainted Glass Closet Doors – Opaque material, available in many colours.
